SUMMARY:Suicide Prevention Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:The Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA) is pleased to announce the City of Dothan will serve as the first stop on a statewide tour of town halls for the Alabama’s Challenge for Preventing Suicide Among Service Members\, Veterans\, and their Families (SMVF). \nThe town hall is scheduled for Feb. 16 at 10 a.m. at the Dothan Opera House and is open to all Veterans\, friends\, and family in the Wiregrass region. \n“We are grateful to have the City of Dothan and Mayor Mark Saliba serve as the first town hall site for Alabama’s Challenge\,” said Alabama’s Challenge Co-Chair Kent Davis\, who is also the Commissioner of the ADVA. “The Wiregrass region is a great example of Alabama’s pride in its military and Veterans. We look forward to establishing a footprint and sustaining partnership with the City of Dothan and the surrounding communities and to continue serving those who have served us.” \nAlabama’s Challenge is a statewide effort to combat a continuing stigma Veterans face with mental health. While approximately 17 Veterans in the U.S. die by suicide per day\, the Veteran suicide rate in Alabama is even higher than the national Veteran average and significantly higher than the national civilian average. Recently released data shows nearly 18% of those who died by suicide in Alabama in 2020 were Veterans\, though only 9.1% of Alabamians have served. Male Veterans die by suicide at a rate 1.3 times higher than civilian counterparts\, and for women Veterans it is 2.1 times higher.

SUMMARY:Santa For Seniors 2021
DESCRIPTION:All seniors have been sponsored! We are always so blown away at the generosity of our Wiregrass community. Because of you\, 400 seniors will have a Merry Christmas! We are so grateful for all of our volunteers and donors that have worked to make this project a success! Also\, Santa doesn’t just help at Christmas. If you would like to spread the magic\, you can donate to this project at any time by clicking the button below. \nGo To Santa For Seniors Page\n  \nGifts will be collected from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Saturday\, December 4\, Friday\, December 10\, and Saturday\, December 11. Our collection site will remain the same as last year at 2755 Choctaw Street (behind the former Westgate Parkway National Guard Armory) in Dothan.  \nVOLUNTEERS ARE STILL NEEDED! If you would like to volunteer\, there are many areas where we need your help. Please sign up today by clicking below! \nBecome A Volunteer\n  \nSanta for Seniors is a grassroots volunteer project to bring Christmas joy to Wiregrass seniors who are in need of basic items for everyday living. SARCOA case managers chose the neediest seniors in the area as Santa for Seniors recipients. All have low income and most are homebound and alone. There are typically over 400 clients with requests on the wish list each year. \nNow in its sixteenth year\, Santa for Seniors 2021 will deliver Christmas to hundreds of individuals who might otherwise have been forgotten.  The gifts usually requested represent the essentials. The single biggest request each year is for food\, with “groceries” becoming the most requested Santa item and our largest purchase of the project. We are also usually able to provide each participant with cleaning supplies. For those on a low fixed income\, cleaning supplies are often the last thing on your shopping list. \nOn behalf of SARCOA and the Wiregrass seniors and disabled who were recipients of your kindness and generosity\, we thank you for helping to bring Christmas joy and hope to many\, especially during the pandemic. Watch the video to see the wonderful results. \nSanta continues to help year-round because of caring people like you. \nThank you!!

SUMMARY:Senior Helpers Special Presentation
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to join Senior Helpers and Teepa Snow for a special presentation\, “The Effects of Social Isolation on Those Living with Dementia\,” on Thursday\, June 18th at 3:00 pm ET.  \nThis FREE virtual presentation for care partners and caregivers of individuals living with dementia will focus on dementia and care during the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal of maintaining social distancing boundaries to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus is challenging for all individuals but is typically even more so for those living with dementia. \nTeepa Snow will highlight the serious effects that social isolation may have on those living with brain change and will address how to recognize the signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety in those living with dementia. \nThis session will also help providers recognize and respond more accurately to the unwanted effects of social isolation to reduce the chances of escalation and ‘non-helpful’ hospitalizations. \nClick here to register.

DESCRIPTION:We recognize that older adults and caregivers are facing many hardships due to COVID-19. Being separated from family\, experiencing the loss of loved ones\, and changing health status can contribute to feelings of isolation and loneliness. There are people who care and there are ways to stay connected. We want to show you care through conversation and ways to stay connected to others. Each week\, SARCOA can arrange a volunteer call to check on you or a loved one. At a minimum\, our volunteers will conduct one call a week\, but more calls can be made if requested. Each phone call provides reassurance by offering a listening ear and an encouraging word. \nThis is also a way to check on the safety of the individual and offer socialization. There are no income requirements\, nor age or living status criteria for joining the program. There is no cost to join or participate. If you would like to be added or would like to add someone to our telephone reassurance registry\, please submit the registration information that can be downloaded below. \nTo find out more or to download an application click here.

SUMMARY:Celebrate Older Americans Month
DESCRIPTION:Around the nation\, older adults make their marks every day as volunteers\, employees\, employers\, parents\, grandparents\, mentors\, and advocates. They offer their time\, talents\, and experience to the benefit of our communities. \nFor 57 years\, Older Americans Month (OAM) has been a special time to recognize these contributions. Led by the Administration for Community Living (ACL) each May\, OAM also provides resources to help older Americans stay healthy and independent\, and materials to help communities support and celebrate their citizens. \nThis year’s OAM theme\, Make Your Mark\, highlights older adults’ unique and lasting contributions to their communities—everything from sharing a story with grandchildren to leaving a legacy of community action. In the spirit of this theme\, here are a few ways to make your mark this May and all year long: \nVolunteer your time. Local schools\, shelters\, food kitchens\, and hospitals always need support. Help a neighbor by prepping a meal\, picking up groceries\, or giving them a ride. Or\, take time to pass on your knowledge. Why not tutor a student who could use extra help in math\, music\, or science? \nShare your story. There are so many ways to do this\, from showing your grandkids around your old neighborhood to writing a book. Take a class and learn how to express yourself with the arts! Or\, assemble a photo album of important moments in your life. \nGet involved in your neighborhood. Join a homeowner or resident association\, organize a block party\, or sign up for a book club or other social group. Have a green thumb? Small projects like planting flowers in your yard or cleaning up the community park have a big impact. \nCommunities that support and include all their members are stronger! Please join [organization/community name] in strengthening our community – [insert call to action\, such as events\, volunteering opportunities\, or social media activities]. \nNeed OAM resources or want to learn more? Visit the official website\, acl.gov/oam\, and follow ACL on Twitter and Facebook. \nWe invite you to make your mark in May. The Administration For Community Living website provides artwork\, activity ideas\, and other materials to help you observe Older Americans Month. Don’t forget to share your #OAM2020 plans and stories on social media. \nClick here to go to the ACL artwork\, activity ideas\, and other materials website page.
